I became interested in stocks on Black Monday in 1987, and have been involved to varying degrees since. I have worked in Finance since 2000. I believe investments should be primarily based upon fundamentals, but I also believe that the short term is determined by group think / popularity / fear & greed. I believe that the big money is made by buying and holding for the longer term stocks that are at a cheap price (discounted earnings method) and are also growing their earnings - i.e. if you buy a dollar for 80 cents and it throws off 10% interest each year, then you've got a winner.
Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I believe that we are in an ongoing (or "secular") bear market that will not be solved until stocks become cheap again (look for a ttm P/E for the S&P 500 of 7 to 13 [and expect earnings to decline or stagnate for a period of time].
